Meet Kevin Sears, the Surprise Leader of NAR
When Kevin Sears took over as the president of the National Association of Realtors, it was a surprise to many. Just six months into his new role, Kevin is working tirelessly to address the challenges the organization is facing. In this exclusive interview with Inman, Kevin shares his views on the future of NAR, the government’s investigation, and his own personal takeaways from his first six months at the helm.
A Circus Leader?
Kevin’s diverse background may have prepared him well for the unpredictable world of real estate. From being a collegiate-level diver to diving into a burning fire at Six Flags New England, Kevin isn’t afraid of a little chaos. "I’m a glass-half-full kind of guy. When the door closes, I look for the crack in the window," he says.
From Amusement Park to DC
As NAR President, Kevin has traveled extensively across the country, meeting with regulators at the DOJ’s Antitrust Division, federal agencies, and state and local real estate organizations. "I’d been in D.C. seven times since January 11," Kevin says. "We’re looking to change the narrative and make sure folks understand the value we bring to the marketplace."
Clearing up Misconceptions
One challenge Kevin has faced is clearing up misperceptions about NAR in the media. "What we had seen early on was a lot of misinformation being spread, and it created confusion among our members and the broader public," he says. To tackle this issue, NAR has launched its media surrogate program, training over 500 REALTORS to share the organization’s side of the story.
A New Perspective
Kevin believes that getting people to understand the value of REALTORS is crucial to the organization’s long-term success. "The more people tell our story, the less room there is for misinformation. Every REALTOR who shares the truth helps to create balance and clarity in the market," he says.
Budget Review and Dues
NAR is facing several significant budgetary challenges, including settling a multi-million-dollar antitrust lawsuit. "We are reviewing our budget to ensure transparency and accountability," Kevin says. Membership dues will remain the same for at least the next three years. Members can expect more information on the NAR budget in September when the organization holds its budget review process.
